|A New Day: Sunrise at Cadillac Mountain|
Time for renewal. When we think of these times, usually they make us think of New Year parties and resolutions or to times in Spring, when the Earth is budding anew, at least here in NH anyway, and it seems like everything is waking up from its winter nap. For me, personally, when I think of time for renewal I always come back to the beginning of the school year, in the fall, when the new academic season is upon us. I think it is because I am a teacher and never moved out of the academic year calendar (well, I did for a little while, but then I came back). Whatever the reason, I look at the nip in the air on a clear August night, the leaves starting to show some color, and the new, local apples starting to show up at the local grocery store and I feel, well, giddy.
"Giddy?" You say. Yes. Giddy.
Giddy with the excitement that comes with new pencils and pens, new students walking in the door, new notebooks for writing, doodling, memory making, a new year of possibilities.
I'm also giddy with anxiety, if that is even possible. Anxiety over being able to pull my weight in both the home and at school. Anxiety over having a plan to get everything done. Anxiety over having enough of me to go around for my students, my family, and then finally to be able to have enough energy to take care of myself physically, mentally and spiritually.
It's very overwhelming to think about, much less write about. However, here I am. I had a long hiatus from the things I care about, but having warded off some depressed and wrong thinking, I look forward to this coming fall with hope and anticipation, and yes, anxiety.
I am looking forward to my next project before school begins, which is going to be to fill the freezer with preplanned and prepped meals. I did this last year before school began, and it was a wild success and made my life sooooo much easier. It went so well that I did it through the winter. My overall goal this year is to keep it up through the spring and baseball season so we do not fall into the "order a pizza!" pitfall we have fallen into the last few years.
To close out today, I wanted to share a few photos from our trip to Acadia National Park. It is absolutely beautiful and was a great place to get my mind and soul back in gear and refocused.
As the fall approaches, and the back to school sales start, and the apples ripen, are you using the change of season as a time of renewal? If so, what are you renewing? What are some goals you have for yourself or your family in this new season? I'd love to hear from you!
